The Xmas Markets to Lille and Bruges December 2013

A great Christmas trip to the christmas markets of Bruges in Belgium and Lille in France with a massive shopping trip to Cite Europe near to the crossing point. Last year we went by Ferry, however for a change we tried the Channel Tunnel and it saved us hours on the crossing time. The bus just drove straight onto the train and thirty minutes later we were near to Calais France with a 1:15 min drive to the city of Lille the largest city in French Flanders and the fourth largest city in France. The Hotel on the Rue De Paris was very close to the centre of the city and whilst the hotel rooms were a little small they were both clean and Tidy, however the drains smelled a bit (This is common in France), but there was a bar downstairs and it had some nice beers for me to try. With only a ten min walk from the hotel we were soon in the centre of the City and it was heaving with holiday makers all keen on spending their cash on christmas trinkets (Gail, this was you) how many baubles does one woman need. It says on the web site that it is very large however its anything but, its tiny but at night it does get very festive with all the lights etc. Its full of xmas stalls selling you all things festive from stuffed owls to Princess wands costing £10 for a bit of wood (yes you Gail ), but we soon found the french food stalls and it got a bit better after a few drinks etc of mulled wine

After a nights rest and a good breakfast in the hotel we left early for the short journey into Bruges Belgium and had a great six hours in this medieval town, even this was not enough and we shall return in the summertime I hope. Bruges is famous for its Belgium Chocolates and we had a frenzy in the vast amount of chocolate shops along the small narrow streets, they tasted great and we got a load for xmas which we shall share with all the family (Not !!). Beer is another of my favourite things and we found a great little beer house where I had a great dark Beer the name I'm afraid i can't remember, this was followed by Mules & Frits (Mussels & Chips ) in a nice white wine sauce the cost about 40 Euro . The shops around the small streets sell nice xmas trinkets if you like that kind of thing and we got something to bring home to add to the multitude of xmas festive treats, we got something from here last year so we are adding as the years go by.

The last day we did more shopping (we really needed that) at the Cite Europe shopping centre a huge place crammed full of shops where the french can yet again extract more cash, trust me the place is huge. Oh what xmas joy I had, I was as giddy as a schoolgirl looking at my last euros disappear . I am going to bite the bullet next year and drive here myself and see how we get on driving the other side of the road, all in all a great trip and we will be back hopefully very soon. Merry christmas everybody.
